Looking at this image, you might be admiring the traditional craftsmanship on display, but this is actually a tale of very modern technology. As Jan Trbizan, an Architect at Squire & Partners, pointed out to me, all is not as it seems. The room, situated on the first floor of an eighteenth century building in Mayfair, required extensive restoration. Many of the ornately carved garlands attached to the panels, needed replacement, and unsurprisingly, craftsman capable of this sort of work are rare. That’s where the technology comes in, for the replacements, are the product of 3D printing, not that you’d ever have guessed.
